STOP PRESS ..... Our first win! Council voted introducing 3 hours free parking for residents & ratepayers at Extraordinary meeting on Monday night (15/10/12) and now 3 hours free in the evenings as well! This will be a huge boost for local eateries and our wonderful Manly Cinema.
How it will Work: A swipe smart card will allow access to all Council carparks, with the first 3 hours free. Apply to Manly Council either on-line or over the counter. One card per household at $20 each.
Cards will be available by the end of April, 2013.
Local businesses and residents rely strongly on the free parking provided in Manly carparks. Our research has clearly shown that Manly must provide three hours free parking for locals in its car parks, just like the competing shopping areas nearby, to enable local business to thrive.
Yes, Manly is unique. It is not just shops. It's also beaches, schools, classes, community activities, a social meeting place. And locals are staying away in droves because it's just getting too hard to visit, and park in Manly. Two hours is simply not long enough. Those who do park here are constantly looking at their watches to make sure they don't go over the two hours.
Council's figures show that 80% of people who use the car parks stay for two hours. $1.2m is generated by the third hour but how much business is being lost because people are rushing back to move their car rather than ordering that extra coffee, popping into a shop or calling into the newsagent, for example.
The Good For Manly team commit to increasing car parking in Manly's carparks to 3 hours free for locals.
Earlier this year, residents and local businesses were alarmed by the Council’s proposal to remove the 2 hour free parking period in the four parking stations in Manly’s CBD and to start to charge for parking by the hour.
The plans were scrapped in response to community outrage, but the question that needs to be asked is, how did this fundamentally important matter get into the draft budget in the first place?
