We have done our research and providing free community wi fi access in Manly's retail areas is easy to do and very cost effective.
SowHi, formed by two local IT experts, uses "mesh networking" technology, using a special router that unites and meshes with other networks nearby, regardless of whether they are using Telstra, Optus or iiNet. That is, the existing individual business networks, for a small cost purchase a SoHi router which connects into their existing network. Each router connects with the next along the street, (or The Corso) to form one simple powerful community network that can be accessed, free of charge, by people shopping, eating or simply enjoying Manly.
No user names. No Passwords. No additional ongoing costs to the supporting retailers.
With the support of Council such a network could be established quickly and simply.
