Independents Rule New Council

14/9/2017

The first election for the new Northern Beaches Council saw 81 candidates contesting 15 councillor positions, over five wards. Good For Manly gained the most votes in the new Manly Ward, with Candy Bingham declared elected on polling night, together with Liberal candidate Pat Daley.  Overall it is expected there will be 9 Independents, 1 Green and 5 Liberal Councillors on the new Council.

The third spot for Councillor in Manly will be decided by preferences, with Your Northern Beaches candidate Sarah Grattan expected to win after a close contest with Kyeema Doyle, Good For Manly's No.2.

Election Day was a hive of activity with 12 booths and 27,000 voters. It was good to see democracy in action with volunteers working together to support their community.

With the support of hundreds of volunteers, Good for Manly ran a first-rate, community-based campaign resulting in a doubling of votes from the previous council election in 2012, and a swing against the Liberals of 18%.
See the analysis below.

Our first priorities will be to re-instate the off-leash dog area at Manly Lagoon, call for an audit of parking in Manly with the view to putting locals first, and ensuring that the Manly Town Hall building remains in public hands as a community centre.

A HUGE thank you to all of our volunteers who letterbox dropped 22,000 flyers, handed out how-to-votes at pre-polling, made donations to our campaign, and worked tirelessly on polling day.

The first council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 26th September, 2017, 6.30pm at Dee Why Council Chambers when the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be elected by the Councillors.

Congratulations. At last some politicians who put the people and wellbeing of Manly before their own egos and self promotion. You have demonstrated your commitment over a long period and have been justly rewarded. Just make sure you keep it up and you will have a long tenure. The outgoing liberals are where they should be. - kicked out.

Congratulations on a great campaign and a commanding win which proves you were very much in the right all along. You have saved Manly ratepayers a very large sum of money from a potential massive overspend. Life goes on of course and it is great to hear about your efforts to keep the lovely former Manly Council Chambers as a community centre. Is there any chance this building might also partly accomodate a small cinema? Manly cinema still very much missed. The interests of Manly feel like they are in very safe hands. Thank you Candy.

Candy Bingham's victory is something to be savoured by all members of the Manly Ward.
I remember before being elected to Manly Council, how Candy used to attend practically every council meeting month after month working out her policies and how she believed council should be run.
Having been elected to council in 2012 she immediately called for transparency and proper process without which no council can serve its community with honour and integrity.
I have been studying the results carefully, and one figure which shows Candy's strengths, is the informal vote of 6.71%. Do you realize that in some wards, this figure was over 12% and others 11%.
Let's hope Michael Regan is elected mayor with Candy Bingham deputy - today's Manly Daily. (It looks as though the former Manly Mayor is still trying to control affairs.)

Congratulations Candy on an outstanding win, this result justifies your efforts over the years in looking after all Manly residents despite the negative obstructionist efforts by the last Liberal controlled Manly Council. Thankfully current results over the whole Northern Beaches Council region seem to indicate that so far as our local council region is concerned the Liberals are a spent force. We can only hope that Reagen and yourself are able to take the leadership of a great area so all residents benefit.

Thank you Candy and the Good For Manly Team.
Wishing you all the best in your term on the New Northern Beaches Council.
I would like you to be elected Mayor.

You deserve to have your sane and rational ideas adopted after the long struggle with the politically motivated and corrupt Manly Council.

Congrats to Candy and team. It appears that a lesson has been learnt from the disaster which was the old Liberal dominated Manly Council. Sorry I was out of action and unable to help. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations Candy and the team and all the volunteers. You deserved to win so handsomely after the way you stood up for financial sanity against that Liberal voting bloc in the defunct Manly Council.
The citizens of Manly remembered and are grateful.
Next job is to get you elected Mayor. Bravissima!!!

Well done Candy and a pity Ky looks like missing out. Funny how the "noisy minority" which spoiled the former Mayor's run is now the majority.
