![]() While the areas around Manly are generally clean, cigarette butts continue to be a major problem as they have to be picked-up by hand during clean-up. Sunday's annual Clean Up Australia Day highlighted what a problem butts have become with 183 butts collected around one seat alone in a non-smoking park! Has anyone got a creative solution on how we can prevent cigarette butts littering our beaches & parks?

Even though the rate of smoking has declined rapidly since the 1950's I don't think it will ever be eradicated ( at least in our lifetime) - hence the cigarette manufacturers won't be going out of business anytime soon.

How about banning smoking in public areas within Manly and even banning the sale of cigarettes within the area? Too radical a move? I dare say it wont be in the not too distance future. A change of this kind serves to benefit all (except the cigarette manufacturers) It will take time for a change like this to take effect but it is a valid solution and clearly promotes health and wellbeing. Lead the revolution I say :) First step is to put time into considering it as an option.

As a non smoker myself I agree whole heartedly. To be honest, I think it will also wipe out 50% of visitors to Manly, and tourism. Perhaps not a bad idea? :). In the long long term, I would say go for the Ideal! , in the short term, we still need to find a solution.
