More Restaurants For Manly Wharf

Manly Wharf is set to have a $9 million facelift with the owner, Seagrass Capital, looking to add a second storey as well as upgrading the existing facilities
Picture
Although many locals are concerned by the increased concentration of a large numbers of people at the wharf precinct, nonetheless the upgrade of existing facilities is considered overdue.

It is believed that the group, run by property industry investor Robert Magid, now has a shortlist of construction firms.  A hand-selected list of restaurateurs will be invited to submit expressions of interest to join the current tenants including Hugo's, Papi Chulo and the Bavarian restaurant.

Two new restaurants, 563 square metres and 548 sqm in size, with floor to ceiling views and outdoor dining will be built  above the existing Wharf Hotel and Papi Chulo establishments.

The Manly Independent Assessment Panel approved the development plans for the second-storey restaurants, in October 2015 in accordance with the original conditions of consent as approved by the Land & Environment Court of NSW in July 2013.

Additional modifications to the existing property include new passenger and operational lifts, joint lobby, extra storage and an additional private staircase.

Background on Manly Wharf
Built in 1855 as a passenger terminal, Manly Wharf has undergone many changes.
The latest plan is the second transformation of the wharf by Mr Magid.
In 2001, he got the green light to start a $12 million redevelopment of the wharf into an eating and shopping precinct. That plan, which also included a proposal for a 200-room, six-storey hotel, was knocked back by Manly Council.

That revised plan led him to transform the site into an "emporium" of restaurants, cafes, shops and the current crop of bars.

I think it will be fabulous. Its about time that the entrance to Manly will be cleaned up and smartened up. Thank God you stopped the Hotel, it would have been another eyesore looming over our beautiful harbour.

Thanks for the update. Do you know how much higher it will go? Especially on the East Esplanade side.

thanks mate

The addition will only be on the East Esplanade site and will house two new restaurants.

Actually I think it's dreadful - the quaint and lovely face of manly when you come in on the ferry - it will just look like an awful shopping mall . Plus who needs a second story - not the people coming in on the ferry , not the pedestrians from the beach to the harbour and not the people living behind it. When people say it will make the place look better .... try a good clean, and putting good tenants in . Is the developer going to ensure that it looks slightly historic to reflect what the place actually is ? That is Manly Wharf. Is the management going to ensure it is not filled with fast food outlets like most of the Corso looks like - no style going on there. Is the developer going to ensure it's not just a big glass box like Westfields? My point is development is not the answer to making something look nice - actually looking after a place and actually curating tenants is what makes a place unique . I think it is an awful awful uneccessay shame and good for one person - the developer . Ah, again .

Just to clarify ....

1. the approval was given by the Joint Regional Planning Panel last year. It is a large project, too big for Council to approve.

2. The design is sympathetic with the historic wharf.

3. There will be upmarket restaurants, like Hugos & Papi Chulo, not takeaway food outlets, in the new addition.

Make it smarter by all means but we really don't need a second storey as this will interupt any current views and will look like a wall of concrete and glass. I feel any development should diminish in height towards the sea. Not block it.

I tend to agree with Joanna. It's better than the hotel they had wanted to put up, but slowly Manly is becoming full of fast food outlets and losing all its establishments which made the place interesting and unique.

I too agree with Joanna. We have enough restaurants and greasy
take away it would be sad to see the Manly wharf lose it's character.
Please don't let this happen. Manly is overcrowded as it is, if you can find a park it is your lucky day!

Hi Candy,

Will 'Seagrass Capital' be refurbishing/restoring/replacing our Landmark Manly Wharf Clock? If not them, can we expect action soon and by whom?

Hi Peter.

Yes, apparently the new parts have now arrived so the clock should be fully operational again as I type!

We seem to be getting incremental developments, shop by shop. Manly Wharf deserves better. There should be an overall master design signifying Manly's proud heritage as a great place to visit.
We need a great gateway, not just a gaggle of shops on a wharf.
