Small Ferries Fail Disabled Passengers

17/12/2021

In late October, the state government quietly rolled out the first of three Emerald class ferries amid protests to keep all four of the larger, original Freshwater class ferries operational.

It's been a disaster with two Emeralds - the Fairlight and Balmoral - already suffering a cracked hull, rudder issues and a broken window.  Propeller works are being conducted on the Clontarf before it has taken its first passenger. The smaller boats are also unable to cross the Heads in rough seas and can't dock at the main ferry wharves when the tide is low.

And now, it's clear they are not suitable for disabled people. There's not enough floor space, especially with the gangplank cluttering up the inside space. The steeply arched gangplanks can be unsuitable for wheelchairs or people with mobility issues.  Local wheelchair-user Evelyn Shervington discovered he was unable to leave the ferry at low tide on his own.  Deck hands had to be called in to drag him up the gangplank. It's outrageous.

Details here.

Candy,
Firstly congratulations on your reelection as a Councillor and Deputy Mayor although as you know I disagree with your policy of supporting the anti-social behaviour of the "office" workers on East Esplanade" which-while quietened down since Council blocked off the area for several weeks is again starting to attract the anti-social crowds your opposition to these Emerald class ferries is to be congratulated. I wonder what wonder boy Griffin has to say about these new ferries now seeing that he had to be dragged screaming to show some support for a second ferry, but only for weekend runs, and I have yet to hear his comments re keeping the 3rd ferry and I am sure that once our strong sea swells return there will be acknowledgement that we will need a 4th ferry to maintain a reliable service. Just maybe State Politics is your next step for Manly region as your main policies are directed to helping people.

Morning Candy,
Yes, what a joke with these new ferries. Watched the performance the other day from my deck with low tide in play, fast ferries waiting for the new ferries to leave their wharf, then another new ferry waiting its turn.
Let's hope the new minister for Transport has a brain.
Keep up your good work for or community.
Regards ian

Hello Candy,
Thank you for the recent information on the Emerald class ferries. While it's not surprising, I am nonetheless awestruck by the magnitude of errors. It's like the design gremlins have snuck in extra anomalies to amuse themselves when watching just how mammothly unsuitable these ferries are.
A friend described the passenger experience on one of the Emerald class ferries as being like a cork in a washing machine to then experience a huge bottleneck when trying to get off. And now to hear, again not surprisingly, that they are not easily accessible for passengers with a disability....!!
Who ordered these ferries? Surely there must be some sort of accountability.
Bring back all of the Freshwater class ferries!
Di Johnson.

I think the NSW government should identify the members of the committee who made the choice of these new ferries. Even before the ferries were tested on the service, anyone who has experienced the queues waiting to board the ferries late on Sunday afternoons knows that the queue extends back to the lights at the end of the Corso even when the old ferries are operating; Capacity of new ferries 450 v 1400 on the old ferries.. Even when the decision is exposed for what it is, the minister tries to squirm his way out of it.Own up to a dud decision minister
Generally this government has made some great transport decisions, this one is an absolute howler !!

Government decision makers on these new ferries should be named & shamed,
. Australian & New Zealand boat builders/designers should have been chosen for tender as they are as good, or better than than ANY in the world.
Cheers.
