What's Next with the Oval Car Park plan?

Watch our video for the latest update.

It would seem that everyone is waiting for the final response from the Office of Local Government in relation to Manly Council's proposal to build a 760 space car park under Manly Oval.

It is interesting to note that the Chamber of Commerce has changed their position, now publicly suggesting members 'ignore the negative campaign' against the project. Nonetheless we wish to acknowledge and thank the President, Mark Stanley, who organised a Meeting of Stakeholders with Council's experts to address unanswered questions. Good for Manly had two representatives present.  (See minutes below for more detail.)

The majority of Manly Resident  Precinct Groups however still seem firmly against the Oval car park (although like most they support the regeneration of the laneways.)  A number of precincts believe the Oval car park  project should be the subject of a referendum at the next Council election.

Manly's four independent Councillors remain concerned about the viability and impact of the proposed car park project which includes the demolition of the well-used Whistler Street car park. Councillors Aird, Bingham, Burns and Griffin have this week forwarded a final response to the Office of Local Government , who are reviewing the capital expenditure.  A detailed submission, including advice from independent experts, has also been submitted.  See copies below:

It seems the Mayor and Liberal Councillors are NOT prepared to hear any dissent regarding their Shrine and edifice, being an out of place buried car park that is, by their own reports, uneconomic and one that will repel customers to surrounding areas, where parking is close, easy and FREE.

Let me refer you to Manly Council's" Draft Community Strategic Plan beyond 2024". Look at the index, and you will note there is no mention of Manly2015 and the Manly Oval Car Park.
Now go to Pages 23, 24 & 25 and read all about it - that's a joke!
Presumably if we do not lodge an objection, Manly Council will maintain that we approve of what is taking place, and go full steam ahead.

Ross,

What drivel. With what facts do you make your comment?

@"Scaremonger" - at least Ross has the integrity to put a name to his comment. Your reluctance to do the same does not do you or your criticism any credit. I wonder if the council faction attempting to blithely rip up Manly oval in the face of public opposition supports this kind of anonymous scaremongering?

Have not seen an opinion from the Police as to how the traffic will be handled i.e. general public, emergency services and bus services up and down Sydney Road - living on that road we experience the constant heavy flow of traffic - this is a matter that needs clarification as a matter of urgency. Surely it is not imagined that Raglan Street be used !!!!!!!
