Work has started on Manly Oval to construct a stormwater detention system.
The in-ground tank and associated pipe network will decrease flooding on Manly Oval, Raglan St and Pittwater Rd and improve the quality of stormwater flowing out to sea. The work, which started this month, involves an upgrade to existing pits and pipes, a new one mega-litre storage system and an in-ground sedimentation system to remove gross pollutants from stormwater. The whole project is expected to take four months to complete, however the oval itself should be restored and returfed in time for the rugby season, with the first home game scheduled for April 16. Other major work in the pipeline is of course, Manly Council's controversial oval car park project. Tenders have now been called to “design and construct” the car park, with a cut-off date of March 15. It’s likely that a recommendation report will be presented to councillors at the April 4 General Meeting with a vote for the winning tender to be taken on that night.

So, if the Oval car park goes ahead, will this expensive stormwater works be dug up and result in a total waste of ratepayers' money.

I agree with Stephen. If the car park goes ahead I bet these stormwater pipes are ripped up whilst the car park is created. Total waste of money and a lack of foresight as per usual.

Stephen, the storm water detention system looks to me more like Stage 1 of the Oval Car Park, but paid for by the ratepayers.

The detention tank was paid for with a government grant.

This is just another step by this Council supported by the 5 Liberal councils to have things their way, even against the electorate.

Please read Counncllor Bingham's article on the Rialto Lane Upgrade. I am sure Manly Council hoped no one would notice what they were doing.

This is just a foretaste of what this misguided bunch of "we know better" have in store for us. Could councillor Pickering please reserve his comments, about how good Manly 2016 will be for US, & keep them solely for himself??? I'm sick of hearing him blabbing on about ratepayers needs & wants. He really hasn't got a clue what the community, that he is designated to serve, actually expect. As a Liberal voter, he has lost sight of what we need & is far too busy serving Jean Hay & the other 2 Libs.

Thought Baird said no new works to start till amalgamation issue resolved, so why is Manly Council going ahead with so much destruction and costs, no Corso Precinct can be formed but major works are done. Agree a step towards the Oval carpark being done and as if Wong wasn't reprimanded by Mosman for his deceit , his actions here are speaking louder then his deceit

Absolutely correct Hania, as Wong has been caught out telling fibs big time & misquoting the mayor of Mosman. After all the drivel that Wong came out with about how Manly & Mosman were similar, I found that virtually all that garbage related to Warringah & Pittwater. Please Mr Wong, stop writing in the Manly Daily as you're making us Manlyites appear a bunch of idiots...!!!
