It’s been a long time coming, but thanks to a grant from the NSW Government and the work of our local member, Mike Baird, Manly Life Saving Club is finally able to start the much-needed upgrade of their facilities. The $350,000 grant will allow the club to begin stage one of their redevelopment, which involves a complete overhaul of their amenities block. (The current amenities were built in the 1960s when the club only had six female members- it now has over 900, so it’s no surprise that these members in particular are looking forward to the upgrade!)
The Club will also be refurbishing their training hall to increase their training program, and has plans to redevelop the equipment storage areas. It’s wonderful to see our iconic Manly club getting the upgrade it needs. What do you think of the plans to refurbish? Does anyone have a photograph of the Clubhouse before the existing one?

Years ago I heard an ABC radio prog from the Mitchell Library on the old Surf Club building. It was amazing. It claimed it was the best of its kind left and is the best documented. The Surf Club also has quite a few photos etc. Local folk law claims Council wanted it demolished because of 'concrete cancer' but by the time they took to find out it was not concrete cancer it was too late to stop. A large amount of building funds were spent on demolition... hence then smallest clubhouse for none of the biggest clubs.
