Should Manly ratepayers subsidise child care to the tune of $500,000 pa for 125 families using our facilities? This is a question being asked as the cost of providing such facilities seem to be spiraling out of control. Local families may be faced with fee increases from $6 - $14,000 per year per child depending upon how many days they use the facility. Proposed increased fees by Council have been agitated by new federal initiatives in staff pay increases and child-to-teacher ratios which, while highly desirable, are making child care costs unsustainable and impossible for many families. What do you think should be done?

I'm 64, so probably horribly out of date! However, when I re-entered the work force in the late 70's, I was able to leave my children with Day Care mums. Has this all totally disappeared? I was SO lucky to have two wonderful women, who were like loving aunts to my 2 younger children. If women in their homes are vetted, surely this could be a more economical solution, and free up more spaces at Council Day Care Centres, and give young mums a more economical choice.

Childcare is very expensive and difficult to access and Manly Council Centres have a great reputation, attracting families from out-of-area. As the ratepayers are funding places, places should be reserved for the children of Manly's residents.Any children attending from outside the Manly area could pay a higher daily rate not subsidised by the ratepayers
