Locals were concerned when our community cinema closed recently, and rumours were flying around Manly as to what had happened. According to the owner, Graeme Edwards-Kroot for some time now they have tried to renegotiate their lease at Manly Cinemas to help ease the financial pressure of them needing to upgrade to digital projectors*. The decision was made by the landlord for them to cease trading at Manly Cinemas until all the issues are resolved. For more than 75 years there has been a cinema screening movies at 45 East Esplanade, Manly and Graeme says he is confident that a resolution will be found. *By the end of this year, new movies will no longer be released in Australia on 35mm film, as it is replaced by digital film. Due to this, there is a real need for them to purchase and install expensive digital projectors.

There are other solutions to raising the funds necessary to saving the cinema. I've just started working in Manly and as a filmmaker and passionate fan for the cinema, I was gutted to learn of yet another closure due to digital projectors.

What a brilliant idea, as a fairly recent new home owner in Manly, I too enjoyed the stroll down to the cinema

Cinemas have always been a part of Manly culture. There used to be four or five when I was a child so it has been very sad indeed to see our Manly Cinemas closed. The comfort & intimate style with a great selection of movies along with Opera ,Ballet & Shakespeare was always a treat. A shame the technology, in part, is putting stress on the managers. We could all do with a little less of that in our lives. Hard when their are no other options.

Very sad to see the cinema closed. We used to go once a month. Hope the issue is resolved soon and our community can again enjoy going to our lovely Manly cinema.

What is happening at Manly Twin Cinema!! It's been closed now for 16 months! what kind of thinking is this? Greame Edwards Kroot says strata and rental costs are the sticking point besides the fact the Hong Kong owner wont budge on selling price. I would have thought to cease trading altogether was not smart if you still have to pay these costs. Is there a hidden agenda here??? Relevant parties should come clean or let someone else have a go! Manly should NOT be without its LAST cinema

So. Any news on the opening -or death- of the cinemas? I'm just moved to Manly (grew up here) and devastated re those cinemas closed!! Did the crowd surfing idea from James W above go anywhere? I'd be happy to help push this along...notice Justin Hemmes and co want to invest in Manly perhaps this is a better investment than yet another restaurant? If there is community momentum then a reopening shd be a priority!
