Update: Hugo's gained approval, for a three year trial, to expand its restaurant onto the outdoor wharf area at the August meeting of the Manly Independent Assessment Panel. Although this space has been leased by Hugo's for some years, many felt that it should have been maintained as public space. (You can view the MIAP decision and Conditions at the end of this post) ======================================================================================== We all love Hugo's restaurant on Manly Wharf, but is it reasonable for them to expand their operation further onto the public walkway? A current development application (DA) before Manly Council is seeking approval to expand outdoor seating to the existing public wharf along the south-western side area including three umbrella's, thirty-six seats., alternations and additions to the stairs and enclosure of the area. At present this are is used by people to sit and eat ice-creams, bask in the sun, as a short-cut when running late for the ferry and as a popular public family seating place. Manly Wharf is currently undergoing major change with the new Justin Hemmes' Latin-American restaurant to open shortly (next door to the Wharf hotel), and two new restaurants to be added to a new second level in the new year. The proposed Hugos expansion onto public space is an avoricous grab for $$ at an already succesful restuarant the expense of locals...& an ominous precedent.

The wharf area i was built for ferry traffic and is being taken over with too many food outlets etc- the area being allocated to Hugo's is a disgrace - both sides of the wharf will then not be easily available to foot traffic to and from the ferries in busy times etc. What makes it worse at times too are the various fun operators who ply their wares at the front entry to the wharf - when are the next council elections??? They can't come quick enough.

This is public space people use on a regular basis. There needs to be a balance and taking up more of this space for one restaurant is not in the public interest.

Hugos was initially allowed to expand onto the existing walkway, yet managed to enclose the space and effectively alienate it from public use. What remains of the wharf should remain for public use.

tHE WHARF AREA IS BEING CLUTTERED TOO MUCH TO THE EXTENT THAT IT IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT TO MEET ITS PRIMARY AND IMPORTANT PURPOSE OF FERRY TRAVEL - THE WALKWAY PROVIDES AN ALTERNATE ROUTE TO GETTING TO AND FROM THE FERRIES AND SHOULD NOT BE HANDED OVER TO HUGOS.

If this goes ahead, I'll be making every effort to walk right through even if it means climbing over any walls or obstacles. Sorry, that space is a thoroughfare, not a restaurant and pedestrian access should be taken into account. If approved, it will set a precedent and other eateries/bars such as the Wharf Bar will expand their operations to the walkway as well.

It will be interesting to see what action the restaurant takes if people in protest continue to use the space as they do now. Since Hugos leases the space, presumably they have the right to evict people who simply sit at the table to eat their ice creams, fish and chips, read etc or just relax. If not, thanks for providing the seating Hugos.

Imagine if I applied to take over the beach and male people pay to eat my ice creams on it. It's not that different from this situation. Like the beach, let the public just enjoy these spaces for free. I feel sad as so many people go there just to eat a sandwich. NOT ANY MORE.

I've had lunch at Hugos a few times - it was lovely. I won't go again.

Haven't we already been there and done that . We have overwhelmingly voted NO in the community with over 90 per cent of people against it - so why, why , why is the opportunity for this outrageous concept still on the agenda . Read our lips .... Big fat NO!!
