A traffic study and improved pedestrian amenities are planned for Roseberry Street Balgowlah following an initiative by Clr Candy Bingham It all started when Bunnings and Woolworths decided to open large outlets in Roseberry Street, Balgowlah. A once quite ‘industrial’ street suddenly become one of Manly’s busiest and most clogged roads. Add funky furniture shops, a bigger swim centre with changed parking in Kenneth Road, and the traffic is now chaos.
But alarm bells really started to ring with the news that an Aldi Supermarket will soon operate in the street, together with the opening of the Manly Vale B-Line parking station. It’s time to sort out the mess! At the last Council meeting, Clr Candy Bingham moved a motion, which was passed unanimously, that Council undertake a comprehensive traffic study of the area. This will include the feasibility and impact of opening up Quirk Road, linking Balgowlah Road to the south and Kenneth Road to the North, an idea submitted by the Greater Manly Resident's Forum. A concept plan to improve pedestrian amenity and to beautify the area is also proposed. The traffic study is expected to take 6 months.

People have suggested that it become a one-way street.

Campbell Parade also needs to be looked at please. Frustrated drivers speed up the street to get through the traffic lights - there will be a big accident there one day. Residents trying to pull out of their driveways cannot see the cars coming, I’ve had many near misses, the cars need to be made to slow down before someone is killed. There are cyclists, children walking to school or to the park, and you have cars going 70km, on a narrow road, desperate to get through the lights.

I agree. I’ll ask council staff to investigate.

I believe the only way to ease the congestion in Roseberry Street is to open Quirk Road as a thoroughfare Road and make both of them one way only. Which direction can be left up to council.

I totally agree. The pedestrian crossing in its current location is dangerous for all concerned.

These things need thinking through properly but you now have a complicated mixture of traffic and needs that are difficult to navigate. Having said that, as a daily peak hour user of this road, I’ve noticed that the issues are really around typical peak periods. The mornings are especially problematic because you have pedestrians trying to cross the road to get to the cafe, cars parking outside the cafe (nose first requiring a blind reverse), trucks arriving and so on.

Hopefully the study covers Kenneth, Quirk, Rosebery, Balgowlah Rds, Campbell Pde and Condamine street impacts.

Somebody wasn't looking. Opening Quirk Road may help but a roundabout at the eastern end of Kenneth Road or traffic lights are now essential too.

Hopefully the study can also include streets other than Roseberry St itself - so many problems are caused by the fact that traffic that does not to pass that way ends up being funnelled due to other road closures / one-way streets etc. For example: Lodge St cannot be accessed in either direction from Condamine Street; why not? Also Griffiths St (Westbound) inaccessible from Condamine St, Boyle and Waratah Streets closed off at Sydney Road, and so on.

Regarding one of the comments above, the sports field between Balgowlah and Kenneth Rds is sizeable and could afford to lose a strip to the proposed new section of road. As an aside, if the proposed development goes ahead, could you please look to maintain on-street parking (2-hr ideal) which the commercial and industrial businesses cnr Quirk and Paton Pl are heavily reliant on for their customers, rather than it become a no parking strip like Roseberry St.

The current blocked off Quirk Rd arrangement is a great green space and amenity for bikes and pedestrians needing a safe way to access Balgowlah Rd and Roseberry St. This amenity could be further improved by creating bike and pedestrian paths from the green space into Roseberry st near Aldi, encouraging more walking and cycling for errands and less cars.
