It's big but impressive. That's the general impression from a recent site inspection of the new Indoor Swimming Centre in Kenneth Road which is currently under construction. The tour included vantage points inside the site, where tonnes of earth have been extracted to build three pools, and where a crèche, gym, spa, sauna and onsite parking will be located.
Principal contractors FDC Construction and Fitout Pty Ltd are building the Manly Swim Centre which was designed by architect Tompkins MDA. The new Swim Centre, located next to LM Graham Reserve, will incorporate the existing outdoor swimming facilities. The new centre will feature: · A 25 metre, 8 lane heated lap pool with ramp entry · Spectator seating for 150 people · A program pool for exercise and rehabilitation with ramp entry · A fun children's play and leisure pool with a beach entry · A spa pool, sauna and steam room facilities · Administration offices · Gymnasium, group fitness and wellbeing rooms · A cafe and crèche · A separate community building in LM Graham Reserve, backing onto Kenneth Road, will contain change rooms, public toilets, a state of the art co-generation energy plant, bike storage and a bus shelter. · On-site parking for 54 cars including 4 accessible and 2 parent with pram spaces. Parking also available on Kenneth Road, and nearby streets. The Centre is expected to be completed and fully operational by June 2016.

54 car spaces with "parking available on Kenneth rd and near by streets". I am sure that is perfectly adequate for the demands of this pool.

It is a visual monstrosity and I pity local residents who have to constantly look at it. 54 spaces doesn't sound at all adequate on top of other parking needs in the area.

Ferengi rules of acquisition seem to apply with council, no ethics visible.

Well done Manly Council. Progress in the face of constant, withering negativity. Something a proud swimming community can be proud of and I love the fact that existing facilities appear to have been so well integrated.

Double the size of the centre with expectations to triple the number of visitors and halve available parking. Genius.

This is an eyesore - over $20m for very little. How does this council stay in power?

Its too big, may be impressive inside, but an overdevelopment- do we really need another gym in this area? Every resident I have discussed it with are upset over the massive bulk not depicted by plans and my heart breaks as I drive past what was a calming green space with a sympathetic swim centre.

It is a monstrous eyesore that has no relationship to the Council's published artist's impression used to promote the complex. Who was negligent - the Council in having the impression published or the artist in his/her interpretation of the plans?

With all the money spent on this 'swim centre' you'd think that our waterpolo teams requests to have a pool deep enough for them to play the sport in would have been considered.

A monstrous megalomaniac obsession from the local administration who appear to believe bigger, more intrusive development is better.

This development was not needed and cannot be justified on any realistic tenets. What no one has considered is the amenity cost of taking over green space. It is easy to build over public green space!!!! no one can object!!! I see this monstrosity every day and I think of the green space the big trees that are now gone forever. Not for residents, we have enough pool space already. Who is it for???

"Parking available on nearby streets"... interesting that this is also what corporation Invocare stated in their DA re siting a funeral home with chapel at Cnr Alexander St & Pittwater Rd. The swim centre again poor council planning for an over development of what was a relaxed local pool. Loss of Grahams to local walkers, visual open space and the Kenneth Rd debacle.
